The Saddest Thing

The most heartbreaking thing, has got to be watching a mother and daughter wait for a father that never shows. They are sitting in the food court downstairs, silent. They have both finished their plates now, except for one that lays there untouched. They obediently watch the escalator as it spills every new laughing man into the consumption court. The mother perks up suddenly, mistaking someone who almost resembles her now long-faced daughter's father. The little girl looks at me staring at her and tries to smile. Her entirely dedicated mother takes her now and patiently empties the full plate of food into the garbage still looking over her shoulder. I sink in my chair.

Trying to put it out of my mind, the hispanic pair re-appear again at the upper level, looking down at the sea of noisy downtown clerks and fashionistas chowing down, who are completely oblivious to the sad spotlight around them. The daughter's deep dark eyes are watery now, but still hopeful and I think... if he showed right now, their lack of faith and trust in him would be pushed aside by their joy. Their enduring love would probably forgive him again. Amazing.
